The 3 T’s of Baking for Kids

Oftentimes the Sugar Mommas modify our baking recipes and gear them towards children. We subject our own children, carpool children, classroom children and neighborhood children to our creations. We have come realize there are three T’s to baking for children; Tantalize, Texture, Taste.

Tantalize: Kids look before they bite! Have you ever noticed children approach food with suspicion? I am sure you have experienced crinkled up noses, squinted eyes, “pee-you” noises and antics before they even have the food in focus… Whatever baked goods you have created better look visually pleasing or it’s a non starter.

Texture: You may have created the most amazing cookie but once you pass it off to junior, they start to investigate. If the baked good is too shiny, slippery, scratchy, or bumpy, you may not even get a child to try the item. I made meringue cookies that are out of this world. However, I must admit, they looked like mini brains because I didn’t swirl them at the top (on purpose). The cookie is light and airy, the perfect amount of sweetness and crunch. BUT, my son held that meringue in his hand, stared at it, and then tossed it back to me. And I mean…tossed. He was not going t dare eat something that mimicked a brain.

Taste: If you can get beyond tantalize and texture…you may have a chance. The cookie can look good and appear “correct” but if it doesn’t taste delicious …you better get the flour out and start over. This is especially true of chocolate chip cookies or sugar cookies. Chocolate chip cookies may not have the right chip to dough ratio. That’s a turn off. The sugar cookie may be too dry or bland. Then it looks good but no one will eat it. That’s a bust!

Our Sugar Mommas point is that those “little Sugars” are very perceptive! Don’t think you can sneak anything by them. Kids are forthright and they don’t hold back. Before you bake, think of the three T’s!
